Kino 8 1/2
The Netflix original TV series Sense8, created by Lilly and Lana Wachowski and J. Michael Straczynski, generated quite a lot of buzz and publicity, for reasons of its contents as well as its broadcast history. After its unexpected cancellation on a cliffhanger after only two seasons, the intense pressure from the show’s fan base prompted Netflix to renew Sense8 for a 2-hour special—a rare occurrence in television industry. In terms of genre, Sense8 is a science fiction show with an extremely complex narrative. It tells a story of 8 people who live in different countries and who have never met physically, but who are connected to each other through a universal sensory membrane called psycellium, which allows them to access each other’s senses, feelings, memories, skills etc. This is possible because they belong to a different species of human beings, a branch called Homo sensorium, or simply sensate. Sensates are always organized in clusters of eight, and the show tells a story of one of these clusters. The show has been lauded by critics and adored by fans mostly for its multifaceted diversity and the great effort it puts into portraying difference in a positive light—to borrow the words of one of its characters, Sense8 has been celebrated as a TV series that “believes in people.” As well as generally introducing the show, this lecture will take a closer look at some of its formal and structural strategies and how they are utilized to support the main narrative premises of the show, as well as address questions of representation and power distribution in Sense8.
