Despite the continued absence of trans characters from Star Trek, they have haunted the franchise from its 1966 debut to its latest iteration Star Trek: Discovery. When it was announced that the show’s female protagonist (played by Sonequa Martin-Green) would bear the name “Michael Burnham,” online commentators mirrored the reaction of her fellow shipmate Ensign Sylvia Tilly, who upon meeting Michael exclaims: “I never met a female Michael before.” Quickly, speculation and worry emerged about Michael being Star Trek’s first transgender character. This irritation persisted even after Michael was revealed to be a cis woman. Strikingly, despite depicting a cisgender universe, the show seems to trigger and exhibit a trans panic response. This is not only expressed in Ensign Tilly’s reaction, but also in the narrative arc surrounding Lieutenant Ash Tyler’s “species reassignment,” which carries echoes of transphobic diatribes on the infiltration of cis women’s spaces and bodies by trans women. In this talk, Simon Whybrew will examine the show’s and its reviewer’s struggle to come to terms with its nascent trans potentiality. They will show that Star Trek: Discovery mirrors its reviewers’ affective aversion to trans identification and embodiment, but that it may also offer a way out of this quagmire.
