The first part of this seminar/workshop consists of a general introduction to media studies, and a look at media in the US. We will quickly browse through the most common kinds of media used by Americans, and discuss which importance they have in their daily lives. Furthermore, there will be an analysis of how the US are represented in media, covering fields like history, politics, or society. Finally, the first part will be concluded by a quick glance at the media coverage on the US, both by American and international media.
The second part of this seminar/workshop will then focus on applying different kinds of media in the class room, with a strong focus on TV, the internet (mostly YouTube), and music (and music videos). Suggestions will be given on how to include these forms of media in topics that are discussed with students in class, e.g. which TV shows would go really well with certain topics.
