A Christmas Carol is about Ebenezer Scrooge, a merchant and financier, who has hardened his heart against his fellow men, neglected his family, squeezed the poor, sacrificed his fiancée to avarice, and refused to acknowledge Christmas as a unique celebration. He is pursued in his dreams by the spirit of Marley, his former business partner, and by the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future. They cause him to witness a Christmas celebration by his poor employee, Bob Cratchit and his family, and that of some close relatives. Watching the celebrations, he learns of the happiness he missed because of his avarice and egoism and of his own social isolation. Finally, Scrooge is forced to witness, by prevision, his imminent death, unwept and unsung. He awakens to find that he has dreamed the story, is converted by the experiences, and the heartless old man turns into a model of philanthropy.
