Would you like to learn more about U.S. history, politics, and culture? Then join our three-day winter academy! On three Saturdays, the group explores the origins and development of the U.S. on many different levels by reading and discussing relevant materials. The session in January will conclude the Academy.
The texts we will discuss in this course document different views, from the 18th century to the present, on issues such as independence, the Westward Movement, Manifest Destiny, the political system, the Constitution, race relations, immigration, identities etc. These topics will be discussed through readings of central speeches and articles from American history, by such authors as Paine, Crevecoeur, Madison, Jefferson, Mencken, Croly, et al. The texts will be available in due time both as a reader and on an internet platform.
In Zusammenarbeit mit der Universität des Saarlandes.
